7 Side Effects of Tea: Adverse, Harmful & Bad Effects of Drinking Tea

 

1. Insomnia And Restlessness

While talking about the harmful effects of drinking tea, one factor that comes to mind is the caffeine content present in it. One cup of tea usually has about 14 – 60 milligrams of caffeine. It tends to affect our bodies, thus leading to anxiety, restlessness and insomnia. One must, then, limit tea consumption in order to curb such problems and prevent these side effects of tea.

2. Becomes An Addiction

If you eventually find yourself consuming more than 2 cups of tea per day, it is likely that you’ve developed a dependence on the drink. In that case, if you suddenly stop drinking tea altogether or lower its intake, you might experience withdrawal symptoms like headache, fatigue, low concentration power etc. Hence, keep a close check on how much tea you drink daily to prevent this side effect of tea.

3. Causes Dehydration

Drinking excessive amount of tea can lead to dehydration. Too many cups of tea mean intake of a lot more caffeine content than is required by your body. This can decrease the ability of your tubules to absorb the essential nutrients present in the food you eat. All this can leave your body dehydrated and as a consequence you may also feel bloated and constipated sometimes. Unlike other side effects of tea, this one can easily be curbed by keeping yourself hydrated.

4. Increases The Risk Of Prostate Cancer

This is a serious side effect of drinking tea. It has been proven that people who drank more than 6-7 cups of tea in a day, are at a 50% higher risk of getting prostate cancer, than those who drink less or no tea. However, other factors like age, stress, diet etc. also contribute to such a condition.

5. Possibility Of Miscarriage

Tea contains caffeine content that can harm the development of fetus during pregnancy. Excessive intake of tea carries a risk of miscarriage with it. So, expecting mothers should completely avoid tea or coffee at least during the first three months of their pregnancy. Unlike other side effects of tea, this one can become particularly serious and disheartening.

Black Tea has shown to increase the risk of miscarriage. 

6. Causes Skeletal Fluorosis

Excessive consumption of tea can lead to skeletal fluorosis, a painful bone-related disease caused by fluoride present in tea. Excessive drinking of tea increases the level of fluoride in your body which in turn weakens your bones, thus, leading to this disease.

7. Causes Cardiovascular Problems

People suffering from cardiovascular disorders should avoid drinking excess tea, as the caffeine in it is not fit for the proper functioning of cardiovascular system and hence, can pose a serious health issue. Those with a family history of cardiovascular problems should especially be cautious about this side effect of tea.
